Meltdown Festival – London
So, I am came to London for the Meltdown Festival. I had a bunch of vague invites from folks involved with it, and I was headed to France later in the month already, so I figured what the heck. So here I am, with no real set plans besides get-whatever-pictures-you-can.
The jet lag is eating me alive this time around, but last night's opening salvo for the festival was a doozy. Richard Thompson, the least known of England's guitar greats was chosen to curate this festival. You know, following up such slobs as David Bowie, Massive Attack, Patti Smith, and Morrisey. He chose to start things off with a grand performance of his Cabaret of Souls, and 80 minute "folkatorio", created especially with the upright bass of Danny Thompson in mind. Throw in a a string section, regular collaborators multi-instrumentalist Pete Zorn, percussionist Debra Dobkin, and vocalist Judith Owen, plus the story telling character rendered by Spinal Tap's Harry Shearer and you have got something ambitious, grand, wicked, decidedly uncommon, and fun. No one does a talent show in the underworld quite like master of satire Richard Thompson. Once more, "DEATH!" Rousing applause.
Later that night on the same stage - a tribute to Kate McGarrigle featuring everyone from her children Rufus and Martha Wainwright to Nick Cave, Emmy Lou Harris, and a pile of Thompsons. Other stages will have Codeine Velvet Club and Joe Henry. It's a good week to be in London.
